A Tibetan gilt copper alloy figure of Buddha Akshobhya
The deity cast seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne which also supports a vajra, the right hand in bhumisparshamudra, the left in dhyanamudra, wearing a sanghati draped over the left shoulder to reveal the bare chest, the forehead with an urna, the downcast eyes framed by pendulous ears and hair gathered in tight curls covering the ushnisha, not sealed. Period: 15th century. Height: 12 cm.
Buddha Akshobhya, ‘The Immovable One’ is one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas of Vajrayana Buddhism; he is said to reside in the Eastern quarter of the mandala. He also appears in the sutra tradition of Mahayana Buddhism.
