A UNIQUE 8¾ inch GAUGE GARDEN RAILWAY 2-2-0 LOCOMOTIVE, built approx. 1848 for John J. Thornycroft by his father Thomas Thornycroft, sculptor,
the locomotive, unlike virtually anything else at the time, incorporates a vertical riveted multi-tube copper boiler suspended between the 'angle iron' and fitted with pressure and water gauges, level test cocks, blower and clack valves. The boiler is fed by horizontal hand feed pump. Steam is supplied to the engine by a spring-loaded vertical piston valve with displacement lubricator. The twin cylinder engine is carried horizontally beneath the frame on a curved bridge and has gunmetal cylinders approximately 1½in (4cm) bore x 1½in (4cm) stroke with valve chest under and trunk guides supported by a spectacle plate.
