A UNIQUE CHARLES II OAK TRENCHER CASE, LANCASHIRE, CIRCA 1660-1670. An incredibly rare wall hanging Trencher Case, the floral scroll carved cresting with owner s triad of initial W J A flanked by twin pairs of pyramid caps. In two compartments with centre shelf board having multiple angled and chamfered spindles front and rear (68 in total), joined by slender moulded side rails, with further moulded front rails terminating in twin pairs of pyramid cap finials, 14cm deep, 74cm wide and 77cm high. Note - Wooden trenchers were the commonplace eating plate well into the 17th century, many period inventories mention them and their storage cases, very few cases are known to have survived. Provenance - Purchased in the mid 1970 s from the 17th Century coaching Inn, The White Bull, Gisburn, Lancashire.
