A VICTORIAN SILVER ADVERTISING VESTA CASE FOR BELL’S ASBESTOS, 1893
featuring a coloured enamel shipping buoy named ‘Asbestos’, hallmarks rubbed, with sprung hinged lid and striker to base -- 1⅞in. (4.8cm.) high
Bell’s Asbestos & Engineering Ltd. was founded in the 1870s by John Bell who pioneered the manufacture of engine packings and jointings using spun Canadian asbestos. Moving its head offices from Southwark to Slough in 1929, by the 1970s it was the oldest surviving company of its kind in existence, producing a wide range of asbestos products.
