NOTE: Gandillot et Cie, Paris, first developed and produced chairs constructed from iron and/or steel tubular frames in 1828. During 19th century, the concept and manufacture of such chairs, and also rocking chairs, spread across Europe and America. Birmingham based Winfield & Co., exhibited a steel framed chair of practically identical design to this chair in the Great Exhibition of 1851.
