A Victorian silver and glass regimental pepper mill, The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment),

circular form, hob nail cut body, the base inscribed 'Presented to 1st Battalion XIV PWP Regt. by 2nd Lt. C. E. Luard', height 8.5cm.

Charles Eckford Luard was born on 11 October 1869. After Marlborough and Oxford he was commissioned into the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), and this pepper mill would have been his joining present. In 1896 he transferred to the Indian Staff Corps.
in 1910 he was appointed Superintendent for Census Central India. He also published widely, and became the Private Secretary to the Maharajh of Indore. He retired in1925 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Staff corps.
