A Worcester coffee can and saucer, Flight & Barr

The cylindrical coffee can with a curved handle gilt along its profile
Decorated with gilt floral swags and a circular reserve painted with a naturalistic composition of shells, sea snails and corals against a pale blue ground
The saucer painted with the same composition to the well and gilt swags to the rim
Both pieces with an incised B mark associated with the period

Additional Information

The Flight & Barr partnership began in 1792, when Martin Barr joined Joseph Flight in the management of the Worcester factory, and continued until 1804. Wares from this period often bear the incised “B” mark, as in the present example. The naturalistic shell compositions on shaded blue grounds are a motif frequently associated with the painter Thomas Baxter (1782–1821).
