A carved ivory figure of the Virgin Enthroned, probably Northern France, first half 14th century

Carved three-quarters in the round. Remnants of partial polychromy to the hem of the Virgin's gown. High relief depiction of the Virgin Mary seated on a stone bench facing slightly to one side. She holds the infant Christ with Her right arm above Her hip, He is shown wearing a long robe and holding a globe in His hand. The fine quality of this piece is particularly evident in the varied folds of the Virgin's gown and the cloak worn draped about Her body.

With vertical hairline cracks and minor wear. Yellowed. A dowel hole and five small drilled holes to the underside allow the piece to be mounted to a velvet-covered wooden panel. Height 17.5 cm. Provenance
