LOT 171

A composite set of sixteen Regency mahogany dining chairs, circa 1815

[ translate ]

A composite set of sixteen Regency mahogany dining chairs, circa 1815, comprising two sets of eight chairs that are almost identical, one of the sets including a pair of armchairs, each moulded cresting rail incorporating twin scroll terminals, each drop in seat above a moulded seat rail and sabre legs

Condition Report:
Marks, scratches and abrasions, old splits and chips comensurate with age and use. Some natural fading and some relatively minor variation in colour between the chairs due to age and natural fading. Overall the chairs are constructed from high quality timber and well carved. (see images) Some old repairs. Some of these are to cracks/ splits through frame elements/ legs. Some repairs incorporate spliced in associated elements of timber, this applied mainly to two old breaks to legs of one chair and to a much lesser extent to any others. The appearance of these elements could be improved by a restorer. Please refer to the additional images for visual reference. The images are not exhaustive but try to show most instances of noticeable repairs. The chairs are overall of solid structure. A small number have some minor movement to the joints and may require 'tightening' but most or all seem solid throughout. The upholstery of the seats is tidy overall with some minor marks. The fitting of some of the drop in seats may require some attention in order to fit solidly and not move at all when used. One drop in seat in particular seems to be mishapen/ ill fitting at the front edge and not stay fitted into position. Some blocks to the interior corners of seat rails are replaced but not a significant number and mainly use fairly well matched timber. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
