A copper alloy Jain altar. Western India, Gujarat/Rajasthan. 15/16th century.
In front of a torana under a canopy supported by elephants, the jina with shrivatsa on his chest sits in meditation on a lion throne flanked by yaksha and yakshi, he is surrounded by two seated and two standing jina and yak tail bearers, on the pedestal the Wheel of the Law is flanked by reclining gazelles and the Nine Planets (navagraha), at the corners adorants with hands in anjali mudra, in front of the plinth a yakshi. Silver and copper inlays. Inscription on the back.
