Property of a descendant of William Beckford & The Dukes of Hamilton
A façon-de-venise glass jug, late 16th century

of tapering conical form with a stepped folded rim and strap handle, supported by a spreading folded foot decorated in 'nipt diamond waie', traces of gilding
18.5cm. high; 7 1/4 in.

Condition Report:
Cracked to body from the upper hand terminal spreading down towards the foot.

Provenance:
Historic photographs of the Dining Room at Brodick Castle, Arran, show a display of early German glass on the chimneypiece, it is possible that the present jug was acquired alongside these other objects by William, 11th Duke of Hamilton (1811-1863) or Marie, Duchess of Hamilton (1817–1888) as part of her redecoration and englargement of Brodick Castle. However, the collector and antiquarian, Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton (1767–1852) or his father-in-law, William Beckford (1760–1844), who had an important collection of early glass himself, cannot be ruled out.
