A fine Mamluk Quranic Juz, containing text HaMim (26), in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [Mamluk Egypt, probably second half of fifteenth century]

single volume, 26 leaves (plus one later flyleaf), complete, containing verses from al-Ahqaf (46:1) to Adh-Dhariyat (51:30), single column formed of six lines black muhaqqaq broken into two sections by three lines of fine thuluth (at the top, middle and bottom of each leaf), surah headings in gold thuluth, gilt roundels decorated with blue dots marking the verses throughout, sections of text ruled in black and gilt throughout, some water-staining to inner upper corner, some gutters and outer edges repaired (rarely affecting text), a little rubbed in places, 303 by 205 mm.; housed in seventeenth-century calf boards with flap, blind stamped with circular medallions to covers in Mamluk style, also ruled in blind with arabesque designs, edges repaired and skilfully rebacked

A fine and beautifully calligraphed Mamluk Quran Juz, executed by an exemplary hand and probably produced for an important Mamluk patron.

The colophon here rather surprisingly includes the date 684 AH (1285 AD), and has most probably been added later in error or copied from this volumes exemplar.

Ɵ - The lot is subject to buyer’s premium of 25% exclusive of VAT (0% VAT)
