LOT 0588

A large Javanese Buddha head carved in volcanic rock

[ translate ]

The fully sculptured, life-sized head in dark grey andesite. The face of the Buddha beautifully crafted with downcast eyes, exuding an aura of internalisation, peace and dignity. The hair is arranged in fine curls, bound to form a ushnisha. Mounted on a modern pedestal. Height 31.5 cm, including the pedestal 52 cm.
The size, design and style would suggest that the head was made for one of the numerous Dhyani temple statues in the famous Borobudur temple. The temple was likely to be founded around 800 A.D. by the kings of the Shailendra dynasty in central Java.
Provenance: Old German private collection, acquired during the 1960s/70s.
