A charismatic and regularly interpreted late 17th /Early 18th century oil on canvas from the Italian school. Undoubtedly painted by a Master or possibly by a student of. The painting has a Dutch or Flemish style, which might indicate that the artist may have been a pupil of an Italian Master at the time it was painted. Quite beautifully executed , the painting captures the bond within the theme and the tactile balance of protection and affection is portrayed with delicate artistic skill . Painted by a very fine hand with a lovely tone and a statement emphasised by the use of a dark background . The painting would benefit from an authentic coeval to enhance what is already a very collectable piece of Baroque art. Condition : The painting appears to have been cleaned and re-varnished at some point , although there is some sign of over - painting at some stage on the skin tones and also touching in on the backdrop which is not really noticeable under normal light. The painting has been professionally relined ; probably within the last 30 years and the stretchers and canvas relining are in very good condition and in good tension. There is slight paint thinning above the child's head within the depiction of the shaw over the child's head.
