A large and heavy George III sterling silver salver

A large and heavy George III sterling silver salver, London 1804 by William Bennett (reg. 1st June 1796, died 1825) Of circular form with a cast open work ovolo rim of palmettes between stylised acanthus leaves belo a border of laurel, all raised on four cast triangular section feet with palmettes and a laurel edge. The field with finely worked dotted pattern alternating with wriggle work sections, all centred by a circular cartouche with segmented edge engraved with contemporaneous initials GHH in flourished cursive script. Fully marked to the reverse. Diameter – 49.2 cm / 19.1 inches Weight – 3522 grams / 113.23 ozt Bennett was a specialist salver and tray maker, at 2 Half Moon Passage, Aldersgate Street until 29th Sep 1800 after which he moved to 19 Little Bartholomew Close. The circular panel of this salver is of exceptional gauge and this thickness of metal may explain why the hallmarks as well as the makers mark have bounced in striking not once but twice.
