A large rare moulded mortar
Cast bronze with fine golden brown patina. Narrow cylindrical form with stepped and slightly flaring rim. The upper and lower sections each with a band of flowerheads beneath broad banderoles inscribed "HERM SMAL HORST ILSABEIN SLIP STEINS" and below "ANNO 1633", as well as the conjoined house mark "IHS" in a heraldic shield to the centre. Two pommel shaped handles. H 34.2, D 33.2 cm. Weight 35.1 kg. Including a later pestle.
