A large table centrepiece for King George V of Hanover

Silver, the bowl partly gilt, on the foot mark of fineness "750", master’s mark "BESTENBOSTELL" and "CELLE" for Friedrich Wilhelm von Bestenbostell (1828 - 1870). Round foot with extended rim. The shaft in the shape of a three-dimensional oak tree with leaves. The pedestal with sculpted natural landscape with fir trees and engraved grass. On the obverse a knitting young shepherd sitting by a tree stump, surrounded by his dog and goats. The coat of arms of the royal house of Hanover on a golden shield leaning against a stone. The reverse shows a hut with three beehives. Removable silver bowl partly gilt and decorated with a leafy garland. The foot with engraved dedication (tr.) "From the inhabitants of the district of Bergen near Celle to their beloved royal couple on 18th February 1868". Height 46 cm, weight 2700 g.
This table centrepiece was manufactured on the occasion of the 25th wedding anniversary of King George V and his wife Marie of Saxony-Altenburg. Cf. W. Scheffler, Goldschmiede Niedersachsens vol. 1, no. 535.
High-ranking masterpiece of an experienced silversmith.
