A pair of 19th century teak windlass heads from the Royal Navy 84-gun ship of the line HMS Ganges: the circular heads on a baluster shaped support and square base with two location pins, brass plaque to one head ' Windlass head from HMS Ganges. Used in Burgh Island Hotel. S-Devon', with remains of colours to body, 153cm high, 40cm wide. (2) *Notes- HMS Ganges was constructed from teak and launched in Bombay Dockyard November 1821 and was the last sailing ship to serve as flagship of the navy. After serving in the South America Pacific and Mediterranean Stations she was converted to a training ship in 1865 and moved to Harwich in 1899. Becoming part of the Royal Navy Training Establishment she was moved to Devonport in 1922 and finally taken out of service in 1923. In 1929 she was sold for breaking up and in 1930 was eventually broken up at Plymouth. Sections of timber were used to make souvenirs. The Captain's cabin was purchased by the 4th Earl of Nelson , Thomas Nelson and installed on the top floor at Trafalgar Park, Wiltshire while the captain's cabin in the stern was used in the construction of the Burgh Island Hotel.
