A pair of bone-inlaid wheellock rifles by Joseph Mair in Innsbruck, circa 1720/30

Description: Octagonal, in the middle sightly waisted barrels rifled with seven grooves in 13 mm calibre. Iron and brass dovetail sights, the engraved signature “Joseph Mayr in Inspruck” at the breeches, Finely engraved barrel roots, the tangs numbered “1” and “2”, respectively. Locks with internal wheel and richly engraved brass applications. Set triggers. Engraved openwork sideplates depicting a resting hound. Full stocks with fine chequering, rich inlays of engraved and blackened bone and dark horn. On the cheekpieces the portrayal of a resting stag, on the other side of the butt stock a wolf between scrolling leaves. Patchboxes with spring-loaded sliding lids. Brass trigger guard. Original wooden ramrods with engraved bone tips. Length of either rifle circa 110 cm. Rare, exquisitely worked pair of rifles in nearly as-new condition.
