Additional Information

Zachariah Boreman (1738-1810) initially worked at the Chelsea and Derby manufactories, establishing himself from 1794 in London, where he worked as an independent decorator associated with William Simms's workshop, painting for both English and Parisian manufactories. Topographical views with figures in the foreground are characteristic of his pieces and, as with the present cups, are often accompanied by a red calligraphic inscription near the foot with the title of the composition.
A Paris porcelain cup and saucer, painted by Boreman in Simms's workshop, decorated with an oval topographical medallion identified in red on the base and gilt beaded friezes, was sold at Bonhams, London, 8 April 2009, lot 293, constituting a direct parallel to the present pair.
