A rare Japanese or Chinese carved and painted wood

Carved and polychromely painted soft wood. The painting refers to the mythological meaning of this sculpture. In one of the Buddhist Jataka tales a rabbit that has no other food to offer to a beggar than grass throws itself into a fire to offer its own body as a meal. However, the rabbit was not burnt, as the beggar revealed that he was Åšakra and thus drew an image of the rabbit on the Moon to perpetuate its generous sacrifice.
Damages due to age and pest infestation (no longer active). Dimensions 14 x 21 x 45 cm.
