A rare mortar-wheellock pistol with a bronze barrel, Nuremberg, circa 1590

Description: The round bronze barrel set off by balusters, the minimised breech adorned with figurative engravings. Floral decoration engraved above the muzzle and the barrel. The chiselled, lightly engraved wheellock with openwork, screw-mounted wheel cover and reciprocal trigger safety. The lock plate with Nuremberg acceptance mark and the initials "GH" above a lion's head (Stöckel no. 2604). The smooth walnut stock inlaid with plaques in mother-of-pearl, lavishly adorned with figurative engravings and ornamental brass wire. The brass plate below the muzzle engraved with Justice and a bird amidst floral decoration, an engraved depiction of Architectura (the allegory of architecture) under the spiral butt. Iron trigger guard. The pan cover with a repaired crack and missing spring, the lock grimy, but can easily be improved by cleaning. Length 48 cm. An extremely rare mortar-wheellock pistol, presumably used for fireworks or similar.
