A scarce Arts and Crafts silver spoon by Ellen Caroline Woodward, London 1914, with a circular bowl, a rectangular section tapered stem with a central girdle, then circular tapered with a figural terminal, the bowl engraved Henriette Alice Cadogan June 6 1914. From her Godmother N. Labouchere, 17cm (6 3/4in) long, 56g (1.8 oz)

A scarcely found maker's mark. Ellen Caroline Woodward was in partnership with Agnes Withers at Johnson Street, Notting Hill Gate, London. The partnership was dissolved in 1913. Ellen Woodward (1859-1943) was an artist, sculptor, art metal worker and member of the Womens Guild of Arts. She was born in Camden Town and was the daughter of Henry Woodward, Keeper of Geology at the British Museum. Ellen may have exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1895 (cat. no. 1357) from the address 103 London Road. She died in Hertfordshire.

Henriette Alice Cadogan, later Dame Henriette, Lady Abel Smith, DCVO, JP (1914-2005), was a Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II from 1949 to 1987. She married firstly Major Sir Anthony Frederick Mark Palmer, 4th Baronet (d. 1941); and by direct descent to the present vendor.
