A silver mounted tortoiseshell snuff box, of curved outline, the hinged lid inset with a Charles I silver memorial medal, within a piqué work Garter Star and motto surround, the base further inlaid with a monogram below a crown. Maximum length 3.25" (8.2cm).
The medal; Charles I, silver memorial medal by Roettier (1695), after van Dyck, cuirassed bust of Charles I right, draped and with long hair, Rev. a hand holding a crown issues forth from a cloud, above a shepherdless flock of sheep, 34mm (MI i 347/201; E 162b), medal heavily cleaned, obverse fair, reverse very fine.
Condition Report:
- The box displays some general surface wear, marks and scratches throughout, commensurate with the age and use.
- Some tarnishing to the silver mounts. Also with some residues of dirt and previous polish.
- Several losses to the piqué work and inlay.
- Some further small losses/cracks/nicks around edges.
- Some heavier scratched marks to areas of the tortoiseshell.
- Hinged lid appears in good working order and it closes securely.
- The mount tests around 92-93% Ag.
- Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.
