A small Nepalese fire-gilt copper alloy figure of Maitreya. 14th century

The Bodhisattva standing in abhanga on a lotus base, with his hands in dharmachakra mudra, from which two lotus stems rise, one bearing an amrita vase. The edges of the dhoti and the ends of the flowing shawl frame the legs in elegant folds; the body is adorned with elaborate jewellery inset with stones and a miniature pearl on the torque. Remnants of cold gilding and pigments to the face. Baseplate probably from a later period.
