[ translate ]

A small pottery baluster vase, signed by the cast of Chu Chin Chow, made during a performance by a Wedgwood potter and used as a prop 18.5cm high

Staging an enormous run of 2,238 performances at His Majesty’s Theatre in London between 1916 and 1921, Chu Chin Chow is widely acknowledged to be one of the West End’s most successful musical productions. Directed by Oscar Asche and with music by Frederic Norton, the operetta, based on the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, was set in the Eastern Palace belonging to Kasim Baba as he prepares to host a banquet for the titular Chu Chin Chow, a wealthy Chinese merchant. However, when bandit, Abu Hasan, arrives in disguise, a dastardly and comedic plot unfolds. During every performance of Chu Chin Chow, a potter from Wedgwood was brought on stage to throw a pot in front of the audience. The present lot is one such example and has been signed by Asche, Norton and various other members of the cast, including Lily Brayton. A similar example can be seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum (accession number S.56-2003).
