Condition Report:
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Master of the Magdalene Legend
A triptych
Oil on panel, in modern gilt wood frames in good condition.

The oak supports to the side panels are painted to the revers, the central oak panel is cradled.

The paint layers are stable and secure to the side panels; there is some raised paint through the red back cloth to the Madonna’s throne, in the central panel, and minor historic flaked loss can be seen.

The paint texture throughout the triptych is very well preserved and in good original condition. The raised, impasted details to the carved tracery to the Madonna’s throne is intact along with the decorative details to the female saint’s dress.

Minor repaired loss to the sky along vertical wood grain and to thinness through the bodice of the female saint can be detected.

Finer more vulnerable details to faces, hair and to the background landscapes are very well preserved.

Chromatic and tonal values as well as atmospheric perspective are well maintained.

Removal of a discoloured varnish would improve the tonality of the triptych, not least the blue dress of the Madonna, where the folds are obscured by a degraded layer .

The triptych presents well,
