ADRIAEN VAN SALM
Rotterdam circa 1660 - 1720
A DUTCH MAN-OF-WAR WITH A FLOTILLA OF FISHING BOATS AND OTHER SHIPS: A PENSCHILDERIJ

signed in monogram lower right: AvS.
pen, ink and oil on panel
7 by 10 in.; 17.8 by 25.4 cm.

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This painting is in an excellent state of preservation, which is particularly notable given the susceptibility of penschilderij to cleaning damage. The finely drawn details are beautifully intact throughout, with only a few minor pinpoint losses. A small cluster of losses is located in the bottom left corner. Tiny brown fly specks are scattered across the painting. The surface appears to be coated with a layer of dirt and a moderately discolored, aged varnish; horizontal brown streaks across the sky seem to be a greater accumulation of the varnish. The wood panel support retains its original surface on the reverse and is in sound condition. Surface cleaning to remove the fly specks and dirt would not go amiss, and reducing the aged varnish could be considered. Any varnish removal should be carried out by a qualified conservator given the potential for solvent damage. In addition, the framing should be adjusted to properly set the painting in the frame and eliminate potential stress on the wood support.

"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
