Title: ALL-TRUE ROMANCE No. 11
Place Published:
Publisher:Comic Media [Indicia: Harwell Publications, Inc.]
Date Published: May, 1953
Description:

CGC certified: VG- (3.5). Off-white to white pages. Cover: Pete Morisi. Art: Don Heck, Pete Morisi, others. CGC census: Only 4 graded copies, the highest being 4.5. GPAnalysis: Only two reported sales: a 4.5 copy sold for $359 in January 2020, and a 4.0 sold for $700 in August 2021.

A blonde babe and her boozy beau whoop it up on Pete Morisi's noir-influenced cover. Despite the book's focus on romance rather than crime, the cover's gin-and-sin imagery hints at illicit doings, possibly including criminal activity. Although he doesn't visibly carry a gat, the man's haberdashery evokes the archetypal comic-book gangster (who was typically clad, as Jules Feiffer remarked, "in those peculiar styled hats and suits—brought off the rack from a line nobody in the world had ever seen before").

Genre distinctions in the pre-Code era weren't always clear cut. Crime comics often seemed like romance mags gone wrong, with love serving as a catalyst to murder. Indeed, Dr. Wertham dismissed the distinctions between superhero, horror, western and other categories altogether, considering them all to be subspecies of crime comics: "Crime comic books are comic books that depict crime, whether the setting is urban, Western, science-fiction, 'horror' or supernatural beings." — Seduction of the Innocent, p. 20.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
