Title: AMAZING GHOST STORIES No. 15
Place Published:
Publisher:St. John [Indicia: St. John Publishing Co.]
Date Published: December, 1954
Description:

CGC certified: G/VG (3.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Matt Baker. Stories and art: Robert Bernstein, Ray Willner, Sol Brodsky?, Frank Giacoia, Bob Powell. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $250 in February 2021.

Whitewashed witch: A ghostly voodoo woman, whose African heritage is camouflaged by her spectral pallor, sics her zombie slaves on a beautiful Baker babe. African-American artist Matt Baker created the first black hero to have his own feature in a comic mag, Voodah (who debuted in Crown Comics #3). Like the ghost gal on this cover, Voodah was colored white on the covers of Crown Comics as a concession to the times. As Ken Quattro writes in Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books, "That was a decision likely made to placate distributors and newsdealers who would be leery of carrying a comic with a Black man on its cover."

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
