(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Group of photographs and documents relating to the family of Seminole chief John Frippo Brown. 7 items, each 5 x 3 inches or smaller; variously worn. Indian Territory, 1873-75 and undated
John Frippo Brown (1842-1919) was the son of a Seminole mother and Scottish father in what became Oklahoma. He served as an officer in the Confederate army. After the war, he ran a trading company, served as pastor of a Baptist church, and was governor of the Seminole nation from 1885 to 1901 and 1905 to 1906. This lot includes a small notebook, a manuscript calling card reading "John F. Brown, Seminole Nation, Indian Territory," and 5 small unidentified tintype photographs (all found tucked in the back pocket of the notebook). One of the photographs appears to be of John Frippo Brown standing with a Seminole man. The others are portraits of an Indian woman and 3 adolescent children--possibly his wife and children?
The memorandum book has manuscript notes on 64 pages; the only dates noted are 1873 through 1875. It is worn with several leaves torn out, and is not kept systematically, but includes several intriguing entries. One page reads "Petrified snakes 5 miles from High Spring, east toward the Canadian. A boiling spring is there 12 miles this side of Deers, on the road between Olu Seminole Agency's & Tecumseh." Five scattered pages record translations of a few Indian phrases, such as ""Ema tik tun ke siks--I have no time." One reads simply "At JFB to look at treaty." One page describes a remedy for cholera, the disease which took Brown's parents in 1867. Another lists seven "Tribes of Creeks speaking different languages." A page of accounts with J.F. Brown is marked "paid." Two pages show accounts with Seminole leader Caesar Bruner. Who kept these notes? We cannot say with any confidence, but they seem to be by a close associate of John Frippo Brown. Provenance: said to be acquired many years ago from a Brown family descendant.
