AN EBONISED TABLE CLOCK, ENGRAVED FOR JOHN TAYLOR, PETWORTH, LATE 18TH CENTURY

[ translate ]

AN EBONISED TABLE CLOCK THE DIAL APPLIED WITH A BOSS ENGRAVED FOR JOHN TAYLOR, PETWORTH, LATE 18TH CENTURY The twin fusee bell striking movement with rococo scroll engraved backplate, verge escapement and short-bob pendulum, the 7 inch break-arch dial incorporating mock pendulum and calendar apertures to the conforming scroll engraved centre 54cm high Condition Report: Movement is in working condition (ie. is running and striking) and appears to have been maintained leaving patinated finish/patination to the brass. There is no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements (including the escapement) although the escapement top potance has been strengthened. The dial is in good original condition with the surface colour of the plate maintained in a similar slightly oxidised colour as the movement. The silvering is a little rubbed/oxidised and the arch mounts are now attached with screws secured from the front (rather than the rear). There is a small blemish to the plate above twelve o'clock where it would appear the rivet attachment for the calendar ring retaining piece has been worked-on to resecure the fitting. Hands have some slight surface oxidation. The case is generally presentable but unusually constructed from solid fruitwood (or similar) timber ebonised throughout. The handle is most likely original, the finials are probably 20th century. The front door retains its lock but now has a brass pull threaded through it and is currently not operational. Both the hinges have been strengthened (with some form of filler material), and the mask panel around the dial is a little warped (arch curves backwards). Both sides have shrinkage cracks beneath each glazed aperture and some slight historic woodworm hole/trail damage (not active)/ The rear door has had the joints resecured and some filler applied along the upper joints to the inside. Internally the base of the case has a slot cut to allow for the swing of the pendulum - this appears most likely to be and original feature. The base is in good condition, the brass bracket feet are most likely original. Faults are otherwise limited to a few minor bumps, scuffs and other age-related blemishes; finish is a little uneven/flat hence may benefit from attention of a good finisher.Clock has a winding key.
