AN EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY CHARLES I OAK ARMCHAIR, DERBYSHIRE, DATED 1638. The tall armchair with twin floral scrolled cresting above a twin rectangular panel back, the upper raised tablet panel dated 1638, the lower back with tulip and floral arabesque interlaces, flanked by down scrolled and tapering arms, the uprights with original applied pierced floral motifs, the two-piece seat above silhouette and chip carved frieze rails with joined taper baluster legs, arm uprights and plain stretchers, 121cm high 61cm wide Note - Similar armchairs from the same workshop can be seen in both Haddon and Hardwick Hall s, Derbyshire. A Derbyshire armchair from the same workshop dated 1630, was sold at Wilkinsons Auctioneers, Doncaster, 16th June 2024, the Collection of David and Janet Moore, Lot 720 for £18,000 + premium. Provenance - The Michael and Elizabeth Feller Collection, Lower Slaughter Manor, Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.
