ANCIENT GREEK CANOSAN WARE SPHINX EWER
Ancient Greek Hellenistic terracotta figural sphinx ewer, circa 400-200 BCE, the seated sphinx having a woman's head, a lion's body with fully unfurled wings with applied pierced button punts at each apex, and an high arching strap handle. The whole resting on a circular base. Provenance: The Collection of Jerome and Bridget Dobson, Atlanta, GA; acquired from Royal Athena Galleries, New York / Beverly Hills, 1990; Private English collection.
Approximate dimensions: h. 12.5", w. 10", d. 5.75".
Condition Report: Overall wear to surface. Previous professional restoration. A 1.5" chip missing on left side of spout,. The right side of the spout with 1.5" restoration. Both wings reattached. Partial crack at lower left ankle. Repaired break beneath spout and above the head. Having a 1" crack underneath bottom. No TL test.
