ANDREW W. MELROSE (NJ/CA, 1836-1901)

Starrucca Valley Railroad Viaduct, Pennsylvania, oil on canvas, signed lower right, the early landmark stone viaduct carrying a train in the distance, a couple seated at a streamside stone wall in the foreground, housed in a magnificent gilt gesso Victorian frame, OS: 26" x 22", SS: 17 1/2" x 13 1/2". Fine craquelure.Melrose was born in Selkirk, Scotland and is assumed to have been self-taught . He emigrated to the United States in the mid 1850’s. After the Civil War, he opened studios in Hoboken and Guttenberg. He exhibited regularly at the National Gallery from 1868-1883., his subject matter ranging from the Adirondacks and the White Mountains to the deep south, and from the mid-west to California, following the tenents of the Hudson River School.
