[ translate ]

Property of the Family of Kenneth Donahue
ANGELO CAROSELLI
Rome 1585 - 1652
PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN IN ARMOR, AS SAINT GEORGE

oil on canvas
39 by 28¼ in.; 99 by 71.7 cm.

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work is generally in good condition. The canvas has an old glue lining, which provides an attractive and stable surface. No retouches are clearly visible under ultraviolet light due to an opaque varnish. Retouches fluoresce in the feather of his cap, and there is a difference in the texture of the paint layer indicating restorations in the armor, darker colors of the red cloak, cap and hair to the left of the head, and upper left. There are presumably other isolated restorations in the picture, but the paint layer seems to be healthy in the face, neck and hands under close examination with the naked eye. There is a scuff in the varnish in the breastplate that should be corrected, and the frame should be restored. The work could otherwise be hung in its current state.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."
