ANONYMOUS ARTIST, 17th CENTURY Virgin Mary with Child, Saint Joseph and Saint Anthony from Padua (Virgin Hodegetria) Oil on canvas, cm. 94x84,5. Framed The painting derives from the Byzantine iconography of the Madonna Odigitria, or Odegetria, in which the Child Jesus holds a book in his hand that the Virgin indicates with her right hand. The cult experienced a certain diffusion between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries in southern Italy and the Adriatic, with a naturalistic adaptation of the Byzantine iconic scheme, translated into a popular devotional register.
