An antique mid 19th century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, St. Boris and St. Gleb. Tempera, gold leaf, gesso on wood panel with kovcheg. Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica was a Greek Christian martyr of the early 4th century AD. During the Middle Ages, he came to be revered as one of the most important Orthodox military saints. Boris and Gleb were the first saints canonized in Kievan Rus' after the Christianization of the country. The paper hand written in German and describing the icon is attached to the backside.
