Description

carved decoration in the back tray, oak, leather-covered seat, seat height 48 cm.

PROVENIENCE The congregation of St. Andrew's Church in Vaxholm is connected to the Equmenia Church (formerly the Swedish Missionary Union). The congregation was founded in 1866. Over the years, the congregation has owned and managed three churches in Vaxholm. The first church was located on Kapellgatan and was inaugurated in 1867.
The second church was a large wooden cathedral on Torggatan which was inaugurated in 1886. This unique building accommodated approx. 2,000 listeners who came from all over the archipelago to listen to the preacher Carl Andersson.
Today there is a street in Vaxholm, named after him. Preacher Andersson was also a committed fundraiser and managed to get financial funds from many congregations around the country. The large mission house cost about SEK 40,000. Gradually, new congregations with their own mission houses were added everywhere in the archipelago and Roslagen. The number of worship visitors in the Vaxholm Cathedral thinned out.
In the 50s, it became burdensome for the congregation to maintain such a large premises and it was decided to build a new church. The old glorified cathedral was demolished in 1967. From that mission house there are two pedestals, copper objects and an oak cupboard which probably also comes from there and which is now part of what is being auctioned.
On All Saints' Day 1960, St. Andrew's Church was inaugurated at Hamngatan 42 in Vaxholm. The architect was professor Helge Zimdahl and the builder was Harry Karlsson AB. Singing and music have always been central to the congregation's history. The church has also been rented out for various cultural events. In recent years, the commitment and number of members in the congregation has decreased so that it is difficult to conduct any activities. The congregation has decided to sell the church and thereby dispose of parts of the church's inventory.Show more
