KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

ATTRIBUTED TO ADRIAEN VAN DIEST
The Hague 1655 - 1704 London
A WOODED RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH A FERRY AND FIGURES BY THE BANKS, A RUINED TOWER AND MOUNTAINS BEYOND; AND A COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES BY THE SHORE AND A VESSEL AT SEA, A TOWN AND MOUNTAINS BEYOND

a pair, both oil on canvas
each: 149 x 120.5 cm.; 58⅝ x 47⅜ in.
(2)

Condition Report:
Both canvases are lined, the paint surfaces are very dirty and the varnishes are very discoloured.

The former: an old fold or stretcher mark is clearly visible running the height of the canvas 3 inches from the left margin. There is also evident bitumenisation in some of the darker pigments in the edges of the foliage of the trees and in the mountains. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the retouchings which have now bitumenised, and reveals further minor, scattered retouchings throughout which are just visible below the dirty and opaque varnish.

The latter: this painting similarly has some bitumenised retouchings in some of the foliage of the trees, particularly centre left, and through the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these areas and reveals some further retouchings in the trees, but notwithstanding the opaque varnish much of the canvas appears to be largely untouched.

Both in overall fair condition and will respond well to cleaning.
