Condition Report:
Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. A fairly tight, developed network of craquelure is apparent in the lighter areas of the painting. In raking light it is possible to discern a slight stretcher mark running around 2 in. in on all four margins, most notably along the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick, opaque varnish, but would appear to reveal very little retouching, save for some small areas along the lower margin and scattered in the centre of the left margin, as well as a small retouching just above the sitter's hair, approx. 1 cm. long. There would appear to be some small retouchings in the sitter's shoulders and possibly also some very fine lines infilling some of the craquelure in the sitter's face and chest, but it is difficult to discern. The painting is in seemingly overall fair condition.

Provenance:
On the art market, Paris, before 2000, where acquired.
