ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM JOHN HUGGINS

United Kingdom, 1781-1845

Battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake. Unsigned.

In one of the most famous and bloody naval engagements of the War of 1812, the Chesapeake was defeated by the H.M.S. Shannon and taken by the crown until her breaking up in 1819. Some of her timbers can still be seen today as part of Chesapeake Mill in Wickham, England.

Oil on canvas, 30" x 43". Framed 36" x 49".

Condition: Overall very good condition. The surface of the canvas is dirty and has been relined. Under UV exam there are two small areas of inpaint at the stern of each vessel. There is some minor paint loss at the middle top edge. The canvas would benefit greatly from a light cleaning and some fresh varnish.
