About the artist: Jon was born and raised in the city of Jönköping in southern Sweden. His father, Joseph Bauer, was born in Bavaria, and moved to Sweden in 1863, with virtually no money. Jon’s mother, Emma Charlotte Wadell, was born into a farming family in the Rogberg Ward near Jönköping [5] [6]. Joseph founded a successful sausage business in Jönköping [6]. Until 1881, the family lived in an apartment above the father’s shop, and then moved to their own house in the town of Shevik, off the coast of Lake Roxen [7]. Jon grew up with two brothers (one was younger than Jon, the other older) and his sister, Anna Bauer. Anna's early death at age 13 made a heavy impression on Bauer and his brothers [6].

From childhood, Bauer liked to spend time drawing, at first confining himself to small sketches. At school, he often drew caricatures of his teachers, which caused them discontent [8] [6]. The family did not support his enthusiasm [6], but when at the age of 16 he declared his desire to go to Stockholm to get an art education there, his parents enthusiastically accepted it and rendered him financial support [9].

In 1898, Bauer became one of 40 applicants for studies at the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts. Although he was well prepared for training, he was considered too young, and admission was refused [9]. By 1900, Jon had reached the age required for admission and became one of 3 applicants who were accepted to the Royal Academy that year (his other friends Ivar Kamke and Pontus Lanner became two other successful applicants) [10]. At the academy, he studied traditional illustration, painted plants and medieval costumes; later this helped him in [11].

There he received his first orders for illustrating magazines and books [12] [13]. In 1904, Bauer went to Lappland to take part in illustrating a book on the culture of this province and its “exotic wildlife” [14] [15]. At the end of 1905, Jon left the academy and officially indicated on his business card that he was working as an “artist” [16].
