African Yaka Peoples Initiation Mask, DRC. Finely carved wood helmet mask of animal face with upright concave ears, large almond-shaped eyes, projecting snout, and closed mouth. White kaolin and indigo blue pigment details. The typical upper conical cane structure enclosed with burlap fabric painted with bands of geometric pattern, with central stem surrounded by four curved horns. The rim with multiple perforations and attached abundant raffia collar. Smooth worn patina on interior, matte patina on exterior. Minor nicks and losses, indicating extensive ritual use. Note: Typical mask used in Mukanda ritual for the initiation of young boys when reaching pubertyProvenance: Private Maryland collection; Christie's East 1980's; North Carolina collection.
