Note: The present composition is a mid-late 18th-century copy after Reni's original in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica (Palazzo Corsini), Rome, dated to 1638-39. A studio version sold at Christie's, New York, 26 January 2011, lot 145 ($37,500). The biblical story of Salome seductively dancing for King Herod and demanding as her reward the head of John the Baptist has long fascinated artists.
