This charming composition is known from another version of similar size sold at Christie’s, New York on 24 May 2023 (lot 46; sold for 45,630 USD), of which several autograph versions are known. The composition hung in the artist’s studio, served as a model for his many pupils between 1810 and 1840. Our version is therefore an example of a copy made for his apprenticeship by a pupil of Jean-Victor Bertin.

Jean Victor Bertin initially trained with the history painter Gabriel-François Doyen, but in 1788 he became a pupil of Valenciennes, who encouraged him to paint idealized Italianizing landscapes in the tradition of Poussin, while also urging him to practice plein air landscape painting. He travelled in Italy between 1806 and 1808, perfecting his style and developing a keen interest in topographical details and atmospheric effects.
