After Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640)

The Christ Child and the Infant Saint John the Baptist with a Lamb
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in. (63.0 x 76.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined onto a rigid surface, retouch, stable but prominent craquelure, old surface losses.

N.B. The original painting conceived by Rubens places the figures and lamb within a landscape beside a grotto. This copy at hand recreates the relationship of the figures and lamb, as well as the bright red drapery beside the infant Christ, but the figures have been set against a dark background. The Rubens composition was extremely popular, copied many times within his workshop, and engravings were made in Rubens' workshop during his lifetime. The prototype was probably kept in the studio for a long period, allowing time for Rubens and his assistants to copy and vary it. The location of the original Rubens work is not known and may be lost, although there are Rubens workshop versions in major European museums. One copy, described as Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, was offered at the Dorotheum, Vienna, Old Master Paintings sale, Tuesday, October 17, 2017, as Lot 87. There are also numerous later copies, many by Dutch and Flemish painters, of which the painting at hand may be one.
Estimate $800-1,200

Framed dimensions are 26 x 31 inches.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
