Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French 1824-1887) Terracotta Portrait Bust of a Young Woman F1A1

Description: inscribed "A. Carrier" on back side.
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, notable in his own right, is known to have mentored and employed the celebrated sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). Rodin's pupilage under Carrier-Belleuse began in 1864 in Paris and continued on, in some capacity, through the 1870s. Rodin's hand is known to have played a part in the creation of some of Carrier-Belleuse's sculptures. One of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and an officer in the Légion d'honneur, Carrier-Belleuse's works can be seen in major museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Museum, Musée D'Orsay, and the National Gallery of Art.

Provenance: purchased at Michal Hall Fine Arts, New York City in 1972
This sculpture was on view from March 5 to May 29, 2016 at the San Antonio Museum of Art's exhibition, Rodin: The Human Experience, Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections.
Measurements: Height/Width: 31 by 15 inches
Condition: the surface with rubbing and associated discoloration, occasional chips to surface and along foot, the pedestal with multiple splits and loose from base
