Alberto Burri (1915-1995) is the Italian artist (together with Lucio Fontana) who made the greatest Italian contribution to the international art scene of this postwar period. His artistic research ranged from painting to sculpture, having as its sole purpose the investigation on the expressive qualities of matter. That’s why he has a leading place with full rights in the trend called “Informalism”. Seven series of his extraordinary creations: from “Combustioni” (1965) to “Cretti” (1971) , from “Multiplex” (1981) to “Mixoblack” (1988) , from “Sestante” (1989) to “Oro e Nero” (1993) , “Monotex” (1994) and finally “Cellotex”. All fundamental to understand the life and artistic path of the artist of matter, who handled it, changed it, united and merged it. A path that was never static and always in search of something new: he used jute bags, irons, clay, woods, plastics, wood sawdust, and glue. He overcame the limits and boundaries of matter between painting and sculpture, and created unique works which make him today one of the most famous masters of Informalism and abstract art of all time. Not a common artist but someone who left his mark. His chalcographic repertoire, the result of study and research which lasted all his life, allowed him to receive worthy awards: from the AICA prize at the Venice Biennale (1960) , to the Marzotto Prize (1964) , to the Grand Prix of the São Paulo Art Biennial (1965) , to the Feltrinelli Prize conferred by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei for his artistic graphic activity in 1973.
