Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), after - San Giorgio a cavallo

[ translate ]

Saint George, legendary saint, warrior and martyr.

In the work "Saint George on Horseback" solemnity and monumentality converge both in the representation of the saint and the animal. To better describe the work, the words of Panofsky are useful, in The Life and Works of Albrecht Durer (Italian translation Feltrinelli, page 118) :
"The saint's steed is depicted in a foreshortening accentuated enough to reinforce the impression of power and volume, although not so violent as to obscure the objective proportions; it fills the painted space from edge to edge but is not contrasted with a deliberately small-scale background. "

The work was executed around 1505, a time of intense production for the German artist, the trip to Italy made shortly before was fundamental. Dated to the same period are two other burins executed by the artist on the same theme.

Print on laid paper with wide margins, browned paper, illegible watermark. Probably 19th century edition. Excellent chiaroscuro tones, some folds (see photo)
